Day 6 - Coffee Bay

Lesley:  Ok now, that was really strange – we had an hour and a half of bongo drums being played while we were trying to sleep…..I was convinced that it was being broadcast from a loud-speaker on a pole somewhere, but couldn’t find one!!  It was great and very melodious, but gosh, what a noise if you are not used to it.  Seems each one of the back-packers takes a turn on alternate nights.
S: What a relief having a decent mattress. Slept really well and ready to take on Coffee Bay. This area is quite small so not too much to see but the place to go to is ‘Hole in the wall’. It is about a 10 km drive to get there but we stopped off at a view point on the way, which is on a hill just above where we are staying. What a view! Absolutely stunning. We even saw some dolphins in the distance. People go there to see the sunset but unfortunately on both nights we are here there has been lots of cloud.
The road to the ‘hole’ is really bad in places, with steep uphills and downhills.  Lots of children along the way shouting for sweets and sheep and cattle with donkeys here and there. They do not move out of the way so you have to drive around them and avoid the enormous ruts in the road.
L:  Forgot to mention yesterday – the massive bull I saw.  When we crested a hill, I was so confused when I saw this animal with a fur coat on – I thought it was a lion, but when we approached it, I realized it was a bull, they are called Brahman Bulls, which we saw on a billboard later.  What a creature!
We arrived at the parking place for the “hole” where a local, JJ assured us that he would look after our car.  Then it was a 15 min walk over a little hill and along a path underneath some trees and we got to the beach.  L:  Oh my word, this place is great, with a huge oblong of rock in the ocean and a tunnel shaped gap in the middle with the waves crashing through it, God is amazing.  It is in the estuary of a river and has a lovely calm section to swim in. The water is not very salty here as the river meets the sea.  I spent ages in the water as it was lovely and warm too.  The temperature has been fluctuating between 20 to 36 degrees today so the water has been great.  At 9am it was 30 degrees already.
The sad part of today was seeing some of the local boys swing a dog by its hind legs.  Of course, when we shouted at them, they pretended not to understand English, but we got our point across.
After walking back at noon, paying JJ for a job well done, we returned back to Coffee Shack for lunch.
We then walked over one of the little hills to the safe swimming beach and spent a great afternoon in the sea, which was warm with not a breath of wind.  We then hiked back up to our rondavel and I started supper while Steve went to upload the blog and settle the account at the office across the river.
We came inside to eat our braaied meat as it had started drizzling and this time, it was Steve that so generously fed our local watch-dogs with the remains of our braai meat.  Oops!!  The rotters, cheekily pinched the meat off our hot braai by standing up on their hind legs – seems this is a common practice for them.
Have been in touch with the girls and Heather is packing for her trip early tomorrow morning to Amanzimtoti where we will meet up with the Life-Savers from Fish Hoek for SA Life Saving Championship.
We have the same road to cover for about 75kms to get back out of here, to the N2, not a very pleasant thought, but we hope to beat some of the taxis by leaving fairly early………More of that later….
Night All, thanks for all the comments, enjoy.  X
